The terms inter-, cross-, multi-, inter= and transdisciplinary are a set of words that sound like they could be synonyms, and I had wondered if, like terminology in science communication, these had simply evolved with changing practice. Digging into the literature I discovered that they do each have more specific definitions (but like reflexivity, across different domains there is some variability about how they are used).

I have written about this on my blog at makinggood.design/ICMIT in greater detail, but in brief, my understanding is that there is a spectrum from intradisciplinary (single discipline) to transdisciplinary (a blended situation where you can no longer see the original individual disciplines, to the point it might become its own new discipline). 

The paper that I found most useful was Choi & Pak (2006), which contained a food metaphor, likening multidisciplinary work to a salad bowl, interdisciplinary to a stew, and transdisciplinary to a cake. This really worked for me, so I expanded and developed the mnemonic, I Can Make It Tasty: intra, cross, multy, inter and transdisciplinary, and illustrated it.
