Te Pūnaha Matatini is a Centre of Research Excellence — an inter-institutional, interdisciplinary research network funded by the Tertiary Education Commission in Aotearoa New Zealand — working on complex systems and complex problems. Their name means ‘the meeting place of many faces’ in Te Reo Māori, the Māori language. Their strategy is to ‘transform the research system in Aotearoa New Zealand by embedding a strong foundation of values that permeates the work that we do on complex systems’. Their investigators span disciplines from physics, data science and mathematical modelling to archeology, public health, ecology, design and social sciences (and many in between!). They are home to three communities of inquiry: engagement, culture of research excellence and complexity. tepunahamatatini.ac.nz
